The 2011 LIFT (Lutherans in Faith Together) event was held in conjunction with the synod assembly and the LYF (Lutheran Youth Fellowship) assembly.

The Presenter

The Rev. Dr. Jon Pahl is Professor of the History of Christianity in North America and Director of MA Programs at The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia.

Dr. Pahl has published dozens of articles, essays, columns, and reviews, including Shopping Malls and Other Sacred Spaces: Putting God in Place. Dr. Pahl also appeared, along with his son, Justin, in the feature documentary film, Malls R Us. You can watch the Malls R Us trailer on YouTube.

In addition to his presentation on Friday at 1:30 p.m. for all LIFT, synod assembly, and LYF assembly participants, Dr. Pahl will present a workshop, 5 Peace Principles and Prosperous Mission, during Session 2 of the Friday workshops.

The Musicians

Marty Haugen

Marty Haugen is a composer of liturgical music for both Roman Catholic and Protestant congregations. He has over 400 compositions published by GIA, Augsburg Fortress, and other publishers. For the past 25 years he has presented workshops and concerts across North America and in Europe, the Pacific Rim, Asia, and Central America for church musicians and anyone interested in the renewal of worship.

Mary Preus

Mary Preus is a singer, song leader, and choir director. Her experience ranges from church choirs (directing and singing) to jazz ensembles. She focuses her current music research on diverse singing styles and on the worship and singing life of justice centered communities of faith around the world. Mary is music director at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis. Mary's voice can be heard on recordings by liturgical composers Ray Makeever and Marty Haugen.

Marty Haugen and Mary Preus will lead two workshops, one for worship leaders and musicians (Friday, Workshop Session 1, 2:45-3:45 p.m.) and one for LIFT participants (Saturday, Workshop Session 3, 9:15-10:15 a.m.
