Conference Overview

The 2010 Bishop's Conference explores spirituality from a Lutheran perspective.

Leaders for the conference will be the Rev. Dr. Jonathan Linman, assistant to the bishop for formation, Metropolitan New York Synod, and the Rev. Dr. Robert Morris, executive director of Interweave Center at Calvary Episcopal Church in Summit, NJ.

Pr. Jonathan Linman will take up our conference theme in three presentations: “Exploring Lutheran Spirituality in a Lutheran Key,” “Spiritual Renewal through the Task of Preaching,” and “Holy Conversation: Praying More Deeply in the Liturgy.”

Pr. Linman will look at ways in which some of the unique strengths and foci of the Lutheran tradition can enrich our spiritual renewal, how professional tasks such as preaching, public prayer, and pastoral care can lead to our deepened spiritual renewal, and how liturgical worship with Word and Sacrament is holy conversation.

Pr. Robert Morris addresses our theme in two presentations on “Available Grace” (Ephesians 2:8-10).

His first presentation, "Available Grace: The Rough Edges of Life as Doorways to God," looks at ways in which our ordinary and inevitable moments of frustration and annoyance can become doorways for moving into the sphere of God's grace.

In his second presentation, "Available Grace: Spiritual Practice as an Occasion for the Divine Workmanship," Pr. Morris considers traditional spiritual practice—lectio divina, acts of mercy and charity, contemplation—as forms of repentance and faith that turn us toward ‘God's workmanship’ in our lives, and the transformation that the Spirit alone can work in us.

Join other rostered leaders, presenters Jonathan Linman and Robert Morris, and Bishop Samuel Zeiser at the 2010 Bishop's Conference as we explore spirituality from a Lutheran perspective.
