Election of a New Synod Bishop
Since Bishop Strobel has announced that he intends to retire at the end
of this term, a major agenda item for the assembly is the election of a new synod
bishop.
Note: At its March 13, 2008,
meeting, the Synod Council adopted a continuing resolution that
provides for "background checks for persons nominated for synodical
office prior to the Synod Assembly at which the election will take
place or as soon as possible after the Synod Assembly for newly elected
officers nominated from the floor who were not identified as nominees
prior to the assembly" (S9.01.A08; emphasis added). The full text of the
resolution may be found on page 16 of the
March 13, 2008, council
minutes.
The Synod Council approved a study process to prepare for the
election of our next bishop and assembled additional
materials for use at special gatherings in the mission districts held last
fall.

Report of the Synod Council on Synod Needs, Concerns, and Priorities
The Synod Council report on synod needs, concerns, and priorities,
compiled with the assistance of the ELCA Synodical Relations and Research
and Evaluation offices, is now available.
Click here for a copy of the
report.
The report is based on conversations at the fall mission district
assemblies and meetings of invitation-only focus groups. The spring
mission district assemblies provide an opportunity to discuss the report
as it impacts the election of a synod bishop.
If you are a voting member at the 2008 assembly, please print this report
and bring it to your spring mission district assembly. Top of page

Days of Prayer and Discernment
As part of the preparation for the election, the synod council designated two days of prayer and discernment on the synod territory.
These days afforded people across the synod an opportunity for engaging in prayerful
reflection and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit as part of the
pre-election process. The Rev.
Gregory Pile, bishop of the ELCA
Allegheny Synod, provided leadership for these days and shared his
perspective on the office of bishop.

agenda for the day, click here.
