This event will give participants an opportunity to observe and experience how faith can be deepened and enriched through art - our creations. Celebrating Our Faith through the Arts will focus on Psalms through drama, music, visual arts, creative writing, and liturgical dance.

For more information and a registration form, check out the brochure. Participants may register by completing and mailing in the form or by registering online. Publicize the event with a flyer. Clergy, Churches, and Pennsylvania's 'Mandated Reporter' Law

The recent allegations of the sexual abuse of children at Penn State serve as a reminder that pastors and church workers who have contact with children are required to report suspected child abuse.

In Pennsylvania, clergy - along with medical professionals, educators, peace officers and others who work with children - are required to report suspected child abuse, although information covered by the state's clergy privilege law is exempt.

Church staff and volunteers who work with children - in weekday schools, Sunday school, and youth groups, for example - would also fall under the mandate to report.

The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare runs a ChildLine telephone hotline at 800-932-0313 to receive reports of suspected child abuse. Trained intake specialists take calls and determine whether reports should be referred to county child protective agencies, law enforcement or local social services agencies. Learn more about ChildLine here.

Note that it is not our job to determine whether or not it is abuse. If abuse is suspected, we are required to report it. Also, reporting suspected child abuse to the police does not eliminate the requirement that you contact Childline.

Synod Pictorial Directory

It has been six years since the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod put together a pictorial directory of synod rostered leaders, staff, and officers. The planning committee for the 2012 synod assembly is considering inviting a church pictorial directory company to the assembly to create such a directory and seeks your help in selecting a company.

If your congregation has put together a pictorial directory in the past few years, please contact Glenn Simmons via email (glsim@ptd.net) to share the name and contact information for the company, your overall experience with the group (good or bad), and other helpful comments you may have.

The 2012 synod assembly will be held June 15-16 in the Sovereign Center, Reading. (Note that this is the hockey arena, not the Performing Arts Center.)

Most of the material contained in the synod Minutes Book is available on our website. (Rostered leaders and congregations have received information about how to obtain the rosters, and copies of the auditors' report may be requested from the synod office.)

A Time Apart: Tending to the Holy, a Lenten Prayer Day

Throughout the year, the synod Spirituality Ministry Team will be hosting "a time apart" days for rostered leaders. These days will give leaders an opportunity to take time away from the everyday routine for rest, renewal, and growth in their relationship with God.

There will be time in prayer and conversation as a group and ample time on your own for prayer and relaxation. A member of the Spirituality Ministry Team, Pastor Tom Lichner, will be the retreat leader for the day. No fee; bring a bag lunch; beverages provided.

Please send an email with your name, phone number, and email address to Tom Lichner at tclichner@rcn.com by February 23 if you are planning to attend or if you have any questions. Please bring a journal, Bible, book, or anything else you may need for your quiet time.

Looking for Hosts for Camp Noah Camps

Given the widespread devastation from flooding in Pennsylvania in the fall of 2011, it is hoped that many Camp Noah camps will be offered in our state this year. Setting up a camp involves the national Camp Noah office (LSS Minnesota), a host site (in the impacted area) and a national team (trained volunteers who lead the camp).

Any group in an impacted area that would consider hosting a camp is encouraged to contact Ruth Doty (ruth@lutherancongregationalservices.org or 484-553-1162) as soon as possible. Responsibilities include recruiting campers in grades 1-6, providing a place for the camp to meet, providing lunches and snacks for the children, and providing breakfasts and lunches and lodging for the national team.

Training for Camp Noah team volunteers is scheduled for Saturday, April 28, 2012, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Trexlertown. Those interested in volunteering to teach, assist, and lead activities at a camp should also contact Ruth Doty. (Please note: Those who were trained in the 2011 curriculum do not need to attend on April 28.)

Permission Needed to Use Poem

From Church Mutual Insurance Company: Over the last few years, nine Church Mutual customers have been threatened with copyright infringement litigation regarding unlicensed use of a poem entitled The Dash. Those claims have resulted in demands for financial compensation.

Churches have used this piece, written by Linda M. Ellis and copyrighted on June 15, 1998, in their bulletins, on their websites, and as memorials at funerals. Church Mutual wants congregations to be aware that Linda Ellis' company, Linda's Lyrics, is actively monitoring and enforcing its rights to The Dash. Infringement occurs when a copyrighted work is reproduced, distributed, performed, publicly displayed or made into a derivative work without the permission of the copyright owner.

God Is on the Loose!

Last December, the synod staff began a blog entitled Potluck Postings so that they could "share with you all of those places where we see God on the loose, moving through our congregations and people, touching lives and doing exciting things." In the meantime, the Youth, Young Adult and Family Ministry Team began a Facebook page, God Sightings in the Northeastern PA Synod, to invite folks to share stories of where they see God active in daily life, asking "What are your 'God sightings?' Where do you see God on the loose? Where is God calling you to act with God?"

During this year's synod assembly, youth participating in the Lutheran Youth Fellowship Assembly interviewed about 50 people attending the assembly, asking the question, "Where do you see God on the loose?" or "Where do you see God on the move?" Click here to see the video of just a few of those responses.

Check out more responses to those questions and other synod videos at http://www.youtube.com/user/NortheasternPASynod. Then join the conversation!

Word of the Day: Scareware

Scareware is malicious (or, at best, useless) software sold by unethical means. The latest type takes you to legitimate-looking browser warning pages and then offers to sell you fake antivirus software. The scareware is able to identify the Internet browser you're using, and then displays a fake warning page that states the site you're browsing may be infected with a virus. The fake web page warning then offers a "solution" to fix the problem, providing a direct download to fake antivirus software. If users continue, the antivirus program reports "severe" issues with the computer and then offers to "fix" the problems for a fee. All web browsers are susceptible to the attack.

Fortunately, there are some minor details that can determine whether or not a warning is real. One tipoff is spelling errors on the warning page. Another (very obvious) giveaway is that no legitimate browser alerts offers to sell antivirus software or upgrades. Often the scareware attempts to sell a fake copy of Microsoft Security Essentials for a nominal fee, while in fact the real copy of the antivirus software is free for download from Microsoft.

Healthy Practices during Flu Season

As a result, in the receiving line after the service I got several fist and forearm 'bumps,' one hip bump, two 'self-hugs' (where you wrap your arms around yourself in joy as if hugging the other person), a dozen or so loud air kisses and one lovely Japanese-style bow."

There's no need to spread fear - but there's no reason to spread germs unnecessarily. Make sure you have hand sanitizer and tissues readily available. Encourage people to stay home if they're sick. Keep yourself informed by checking websites such as www.flu.gov, www.cdc.gov, and www.pandemicflu.state.pa.us.

If you have other suggestions on how congregations can encourage health, let us know!

Looking for Grant Money for a Congregational or Cluster Project?

The key priority assigned to the Witness and Service Ministry Team is to assist our synod to renew our passion for sharing the Good News.

One of the ways the team carries out this assignment is to provide grants to congregations, clusters, individuals, and others seeking synod funding.

For an idea of the kind of projects for which grant money is awarded, check the Witness and Service Ministry Team grant page.

Grants are also provided by the Leadership Development and Worship and Spirituality Ministry Teams.

Honorarium Guidelines for Supply Pastors

The Committee of Deans recently approved new guidelines for fees for supply pastors. Congregations are encouraged to begin using these guidelines immediately. They became the expected amounts January 1, 2009.

The recommended minimum honorarium amounts are as follows:

  • one service, $125;
  • two services, $150;
  • three services, $175;
  • an additional $25 for multiple–point charges;
  • an additional $25 for leading an adult forum or Sunday school class;
  • and that mileage reimbursement (at the IRS rate) be provided in addition to the honorarium.

In addition, if one of these services is on a day other than Sunday, an additional $50 should be added to the rate for the total number of services.

Fidelity Bond Coverage

The synod office regularly gets phone calls asking about bonding of treasurers and others who handle money. This was a service that was once provided to congregations by the ELCA. Please be aware, however, that the ELCA has not provided fidelity bonding since March 31, 1995. Each congregation must make its own arrangements for bonding. Your insurance company can provide you with information about this coverage.

Communion Ware Journey Continues

The communion ware given to ELCA synods by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Lands is still available for your congregation to use. It provides an opportunity for you and your congregation to learn about and pray for Palestinian Christians and their Muslim and Jewish neighbors. Use these vessels in Holy Communion as a reminder of and a witness to our partnership in mission with our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. If you are interested in borrowing the set (a chalice and paten), contact Pastor Catherine Ziel (Catherine@nepsynod.org) at the synod office.

Prayers for Peace in the Middle East

The ecumenical prayer vigil for peace in the Middle East that began in 2000 continues across the USA, on the same day each month in each state, until there is an end to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The day of the month for Pennsylvania is the 9th of the month. We will include the reminder in the monthly prayer list that is posted online each month.
