- Synod Elects New Bishop A primary agenda item at
the 21st
annual assembly of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod May 29-31,
2008 was the election of a new bishop. On the
fifth and final ballot on Saturday, May 31, 2008, the Rev. Dr. Samuel R.

Pennsylvania Synod since the ELCA was formed in 1988.

- John Smith Reflects on the Bishop Election The buzz at
a Lutheran synod election for bishop always picks up after the second
ballot, on which the scores of contenders are whittled to seven. But at
May’s Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod assembly at Split Rock Lodge in

Read reflections
from John Smith, columnist with the Reading Eagle, on what happened
when the clear first ballot leader removed his name from consideration
– and much more about the whole process.

- Helping Young Adults Discern Their Vocation Vocation is
a term that might get tossed around often enough in Lutheran circles or
in campus ministries, but to the average college student on the average
college campus, discerning a vocation is right up there with worrying
about retirement. It just isn't on their radar. Even for those who do
think about a calling in addition to just a career, figuring out what
God has called you to — how to combine your gifts, passions and desire
to serve in a neatly defined job — isn't easy. Enter Project Connect.
