From the early days of the World Hunger Appeal, the Rev. Helmut H. Kaffine has been involved with the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod's World Hunger Appeal Committee.

Pastor Kaffine served as a committee member and, for many years, as committee chair. He almost singlehandedly made the "share a loaf" concept part of the everyday life of synod congregations and made certain the logo appeared on every hunger piece that was sent out from the synod office. He was also an active participant in the Bike for World Hunger.

This year, Pastor Kaffine stepped down from the committee due to health problems.

In appreciation for his many years of service to the synod on the World Hunger Appeal Committee, the committee decided to honor Pastor Kaffine with a gift to the World Hunger Appeal in his name. A letter was sent to all of the congregations in the synod inviting them to participate in this special gift.

At the 2008 synod assembly, Pastor Wayne Kaufman announced that, as of that day, $8,408 had been received by the synod in Pastor Kaffine's honor. The annual assembly offering designated for world hunger was also allocated to the special fund honoring Pastor Kaffine. That amount ($6,719) plus funds received since the assembly ($4,642) brings the total to date to $19,769.

Thanks, Pastor Kaffine! Clearly you have made a significant difference in this synod – and in the world.
